Foursquare's logo with a guy on it
I’ve totally signed up for yet another social networking site to experiment with – Foursquare! I’ve no idea what sort of use I’m going to get out of it and I’m pretty sceptical about it. My scepticism is a big reason for why I haven’t joined up despite having known about it for a while.
The idea behind it is that you tell people where you are, provide tips for your friends if they go there and accumulate points for adding new places, going to places… etc. If you go to a place more than anyone else, you get the title of Mayor of that place. Some businesses are apparently using this to give discounts/specials to whoever is mayor of their business on Foursquare. Interesting idea.
From a total paranoia point of view, it seems like the perfect service for serial killers to track the movements of their targets from the comfort of their own home (yes, I have been watching Dexter). I’m not totally a fan of telling people where I am at all times and neither do I think people really care? I do like the idea of being able to look up a set of tips from people about the place you are at, that seems like a great idea.
Note to self: come up with awesome website idea before it’s too late. Avoid things that’ll help criminals.
I spent the weekend fulfilling an urge to make something, anything. In the end, I made a game using the Twitter API called “Who Tweeted That?”. I don’t think it’s perfect yet, there are a few bugs here and there but it’s playable and hopefully enjoyable for those bored on the internet!
Basically, it gets random tweets from celebrities and you have to guess who tweeted the tweet. It can be a pretty big challenge at times and other times insanely obvious. Have any hilarious options appeared below a tweet while you’re playing? Let me know!
In the end, it was a great way to experiment with the Twitter API a little and find out how it worked. There’s no high score list yet but I might add one later. It seems a little pointless though because a high score list will just encourage people to cheat and look up the tweets on twitter…
Anyway, let me know what you think and if you find any bugs

Formspring VS Onioning
Today I’ve officially joined two groups of people all hoping to be asked random questions. I don’t know exactly why getting questions to answer is so fun but it’s addictive! I’ve joined Formspring (http://www.formspring.me/thatpatrickguy), a site where people can ask you questions (both anonymously or with an account). That’s pretty much all it is. You have a page which people can post up questions to and you respond to the questions. They can (and often are) about yourself but can be about whatever people decide to ask. It’s interesting! Lots of fun to answer questions when they come in
I’m not sure if it was a bot or not but I was told on Formspring about another site called Onioning which is the same sort of site but way more complex (see http://onioning.com/thatpatrickguy). You can be asked questions just like on Formspring but there’s also the option to ask the public a question and see what answers you get.
Which one is better? Onioning seems to have way more possibilities but Formspring is nice and simple. Onioning definitely made finding questions to ask and getting connected with people on the site a lot easier. Both sites have potential but I think Onioning is in the lead at the moment in terms of functionality.
Totally interesting set of sites! Not sure how truly useful they are but they are a bit of fun!
