What a happy album cover.
Album: Made of Bricks
Artist: Kate Nash
Summed up in one word: Quirky
Would I recommend to others: Yeah, she’s awesome
Animal it reminded me of: Some sort of quirky animal from Alice and Wonderland, maybe a mouse? Is there even a quirky mouse in Alice in Wonderland?
Situation this album definitely ISN’T suited for: Any sort of religious ceremony.
When you choose a singer because she has the same last name as one of your favourite basketball players, it’s really hard to know what to expect.
Kate Nash definitely seems to be well known amongst the people who don’t listen to mainstream music. The fact she has two albums and a pretty good wikipedia entry made this pretty clear. Maybe she is mainstream and I just hadn’t heard of her? Either way, it raised my expectations quite a bit. As far as I know, the Stagehands didn’t have multiple albums as well as a wikipedia entry and yet they were awesome. Surely Kate Nash must be mind blowing. Maybe determining the quality of music based on wikipedia entry length and number of albums isn’t a reliable measurement…
Lily Allen is the one obvious comparison when listening to Kate Nash. So I won’t mention that again. Instead I’ll discuss how very different Kate Nash is to Rammstein, the german heavy metal band.
Both have obvious accents. Rammstein’s is obviously German while Nash’s is obviously English (or is the correct term British? UKian? Londonan?). Rammstein use pyrotechnics pretty often in their live shows. I can’t picture big explosions working so well in a live Kate Nash show. I’d love to see it though. I know about the same level of information about both Kate Nash and Rammstein though, so there’s a similarity right there. Both use some level of cursing in their music (well, I’m assuming they do, I don’t understand Rammstein to be honest). Both are human and make a living out of music. Both poop. Everyone poops. I believe their similarities and differences really speak for themselves.

I chose her first album “Made of Bricks” after finding out from a friend that I should have chosen the first Guns and Roses album as it was the best one. I figured I’d avoid making the same mistake and choose Kate Nash’s first album.
Overall the album definitely grew on me. It’s not fast paced at all, it’s nice and chilled with a mix of unhappiness/annoyance. She seems to be annoyed at people quite a lot with lyrics like “darling don’t give me shit cos I know that you’re full of it”, “why you being a dickhead for? Stop being a dickhead”, “then you’ll call me a bitch and everyone we’re with will be embarrassed and I won’t give a shit”. Maybe it’s just the London weather making her all edgy. Despite all this edgyness her music was somehow quite soothing and relaxing.
I guess she does have happier lyrics like “I just want your kiss boy”, “skeleton you are my friend but you are made of bone” and “you’re the nicest thing i’ve seen, I wish we would give it a go”. Though come to think of it, all those lyrics involve happiness with conditions. She’ll be happy IF she gets his kiss (but doesn’t want to end up in a relationship, she just wants to “be touched”), skeleton is her friend BUT he’s made of bone and this guy is the nicest thing she’s seen BUT he’s not hers yet. There’s a lot of unfulfilled desire. She sounds a little nuts.
Imagine time travellers from an ancient society create a time rift and manage to see this video. Those giant white dancing cats will be the one reason they stop all they are doing and destroy the world, preventing human society from ever reaching this level of “advancement”. Thanks Kate.
Mariella was a very interesting song about how she wishes she was like a girl called Mariella who stuck her lips together and couldn’t make a sound. Wouldn’t that ruin her career? I’d rethink that.
Birds was hilariously random as a romantic song. It started out as a long story about a guy going to see a girl. He then explained he likes her like so – “Birds can fly so high and they can shit on your head, yeah they can almost fly into your eye and make you feel so scared but when you look at them and you see that they’re beautiful, that’s how I feel about you”. I’ll have to try that when I’m in a relationship and see how that goes.
Overall, the album was quirky in a strange way. It had enough randomness to appease my weird and quirky tastes once I’d adapted to the Kate Nash style. I’ve listened to the album at least five times now so it’s definitely left an impression on me. I’m a fan for sure!
Thanks to Sam for his many suggestions, they have all been added to my list of music to try. If you have music you’d like me to try which you think I’ve probably never heard, tweet at me – @thatpatrickguy or send me an email.
If you were wondering (and we all know you weren’t) how Kate Nash and Rammstein compare in the Wikipedia measurement of musical quality algorithm – Kate Nash has 2 albums and a relatively detailed wikipedia entry. Rammstein has 6 albums and a freaking huge wikipedia entry. I wonder if I should take into account the time they’ve had in the music industry and number of band members. I can see this becoming a complex algorithm. Who said maths was pointless?
